A rich history

NFU Mutual's story began in a teashop in 1910, when seven Warwickshire farmers set up an insurance company, offering cost price insurance as an incentive for people to join the Farming Union. Recognising the opportunity, our founders sold policies in between ploughing, sowing and tending their livestock, using one of their farmhouses as an office. 1910

Midland Farmers' Mutual Insurance Society formed by a group of seven warwickshire farmers.

1919

Premium income rises to £4,345 and the Midlands go national.

1923

NFU Mutual employs 40 staff – increasing to 150 by 1933.

1925

Insurance extends to non-farming customers through Avon Insurance.

1935

Almost 100,000 farming customers insured through NFU Mutual.

1952

Income almost reaches £4m with assets topping £9M.

1967

Foot and mouth victims receive a share of over £1.5M.

1987

Islands insurance group joins the NFU Mutual group.

1997

Risk Management Services team launched. British Insurance Awards – Life Insurer of the Year.

1999

NFU Mutual products made available to all.

2000

Group income passes the £1 Billion mark.

2002

British Insurance Awards – Customer Care Award.

2007

The summer floods resulted in insurance claims of nearly £100M being paid out.

2008

General Insurer of the Year for the second time (first won in 2003).

2009

Achieved Auto Express Best Car Insurer for the fourth year running.

2010

Happy birthday. NFU Mutual celebrates 100 years of growth.
