My background’s farming. In fact, it’s fair to say that agriculture’s in my blood. After 20 years in the field, I came to work with NFU Mutual as an agent, while also continuing my role as Group Secretary for my local NFU branch.
Obviously, I was well aware of NFU Mutual from my farming days. They’re ethical, honest and very much a part of rural communities. They go out of their way for customers and staff - as I’m finding out all the time.
I’ve been here for almost a year now. I still have a real bond with rural communities and a large part of my job sees me offering advice and guidance to farmers and their families. And that’s what makes my work so rewarding. An average day? I’m lucky to have an average hour, let alone an average day! Every customer is different and every situation calls for a tailored approach.
My two roles complement each other perfectly. For instance, during the summer floods of 2007 I was able to attend a number of community meetings and offer advice to members of the public in my role as NFU Group Secretary. I’ve also recently attended the National Association of Group Secretaries (NAGS) Conference in Torquay, which was a great opportunity to swap notes and compare roles with my NFU colleagues. It’s a great support network - much like the one that NFU Mutual provides for me and my career.
